Russia-1 is a state-owned television channel that was first broadcast in the Soviet Union on 14 February 1956. The station is known as "Programme 2" and only broadcasts monochrome children's programming. When the channel moved to another frequency in the mid-1960s, it was renamed Program 2. In 1968, it became the home of the national news show Vremya. This channel has a very loyal following.

Russia-1 has the most popular English-language newspapers. The Russian-language Moscow Times is one of the most well-known in the United States.
